No container ship or oil tanker would ever make it into port undamaged, or pass through the narrow shipping lanes, if they were not guided by an experienced pilot. Pilots have to be able to reach the ship concerned without delay, so they travel aboard fast, manoeuvrable pilot boats, which are capable of running alongside the large vessels even in the roughest of seas.
